What Is AFUE? Furnace Efficiency Explained

AFUE measures how much fuel your furnace turns into heat — higher percent means less waste. Here's what the rating means for Maryland heating bills.

What is AFUE?

AFUE tells you how much of your furnace's fuel becomes heat instead of waste. A 96 percent AFUE furnace turns 96 percent of its fuel into warmth; the rest goes up the flue.

It stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency and is always shown as a percentage. Think of it as miles per gallon for your furnace. An 80 percent model wastes twenty cents of every fuel dollar, while a high-efficiency 96 percent unit wastes only about four. Over a long, cold Maryland winter, that gap adds up on your gas bill — which is why AFUE is worth understanding before you buy.

What AFUE should you look for?

Furnaces generally fall into two camps. Standard-efficiency models run about 80 percent AFUE, while high-efficiency condensing furnaces reach 90 to 98 percent. New furnaces sold today must meet a minimum, and Amana offers options across the range.

The right pick depends on how much you run heat, how long you will stay, and your budget. In our cold Maryland winters, the extra cost of a high-efficiency furnace often pays back through lower gas bills, especially in homes that heat heavily. But venting and home factors matter, so the highest number is not automatically the best deal for every house.

What goes wrong when you only chase efficiency?

A high-AFUE furnace has real requirements. Condensing furnaces above 90 percent produce acidic condensate and need special PVC venting and a drain, which not every older home is set up for. Skipping that detail leads to venting problems and callbacks.

Efficiency also disappears if the furnace is oversized, the ducts leak, or maintenance is ignored. A 96 percent rating on the label means little if half your heat escapes through gaps in the ductwork. We make sure the venting, sizing, and ductwork all support the rating you are paying for — otherwise that shiny percentage is just a sticker.

Why does AFUE matter in older Baltimore homes?
