What does a furnace actually do?
A furnace makes heat by burning fuel, usually natural gas, then a blower fan pushes that warm air through your ducts and out the vents in each room. That is the whole job.
Most Greater Baltimore homes run a gas furnace. When the thermostat calls for heat, a control board tells the burners to fire and a metal heat exchanger warms up. The blower moves household air across that hot exchanger, and the warmed air travels through your supply ducts. Cooler air returns through the return vents to be heated again. A separate flue safely carries the combustion gases outside, so they never mix with the air you breathe.
What happens when the heat kicks on?
The sequence is quick but precise. First the thermostat signals the furnace. The igniter glows or sparks, the gas valve opens, and the burners light. A flame sensor confirms there is a real flame within a couple of seconds, or the system shuts the gas off for safety.
As the heat exchanger reaches temperature, the blower starts so it does not blow cold air into your rooms. Warm air circulates until your home hits the set temperature, then the burners shut down and the blower runs a little longer to use up the leftover heat. Every step has a safety check built in, which is why a small fault can stop the whole cycle.
What usually goes wrong?
Most furnace problems trace back to airflow, ignition, or safety sensors. A clogged air filter is the number one culprit, choking airflow and making the furnace overheat and shut off. A dirty flame sensor can stop the burners from staying lit, so the furnace lights briefly then quits.
Worn igniters, a stuck gas valve, or a failing blower motor are common as systems age. The most serious issue is a cracked heat exchanger, which can leak carbon monoxide and means the furnace must be shut down.
