What is dual-fuel heating?
A dual-fuel system combines an electric heat pump with a gas furnace in one setup, automatically using the efficient heat pump for most of the season and switching to the furnace only when it turns truly cold. You get the best of both.
Think of it as a smart partnership. For the milder temperatures that make up most of a Maryland winter, the heat pump heats your home efficiently using electricity. When the temperature drops to a point where gas heat is more effective and economical, the system hands off to the furnace. The changeover is automatic, based on outdoor temperature, so you never have to think about it. It is a popular choice for homes that already have natural gas.
How the handoff works
Dual-fuel systems switch sources at a set outdoor temperature called the balance point. Above it, the heat pump runs alone because it is the cheaper, more efficient way to heat. Below it, the gas furnace takes over because deep cold is where gas heat has the advantage.
A compatible thermostat and outdoor sensor manage this automatically, so only one heat source runs at a time. That is different from a standard heat pump with electric backup, where pricey electric resistance heat assists on cold days. With dual-fuel, your efficient heat pump carries the bulk of the season and your furnace handles the extremes, which tends to keep total heating costs low across a full Greater Baltimore winter.
Where dual-fuel goes wrong
The most common dual-fuel problem is a balance point or thermostat set up incorrectly, which makes the furnace run when the heat pump alone would be cheaper, or vice versa. A mis-wired or incompatible thermostat can defeat the whole efficiency advantage.
We also see systems where the two components were not properly matched, or where someone replaced one half without configuring the controls for dual-fuel operation. When it is dialed in correctly, a dual-fuel system is nearly invisible and very economical. When it is not, you can end up paying more than a single system would cost.
